Sexuality Standards and Reported Church Attendance Last Month

People who require more love and commitment prior to sex reported attending church services more often in the last month than did those who require less love and commitment prior to sex (Oklahoma sample r =.-.48, p < .01, Love Test sample r =.-.35, p < .01).

Note: Means with different subscripts are significantly different using Tukey HSD post hoc comparisons (p < .05). It should be noted that with the large Love Test sample size, the small group differences between the < Love and Love groups was statistically significant even though those two groups only differed only slightly.

For the Oklahoma Sample, people who require engagement or marriage prior to sex reported attending church more frequently during the last month than did 1) those who require only love prior to the onset of sexual relations and 2) those who require friendship or casual acquaintance prior to the onset of sexual intercourse. For The love Test sample the same pattern of difference was evident, however, due to the large sample size, all three groups differed in their reports of church attendance during the last month.

Sexuality Standards and Self ratings of Religiosity

The Love Test sample was asked to rate themselves in terms of how religious they consider themselves to be. Response options were:

  1. Not religious
  2. Somewhat religious
  3. Moderately religious
  4. Very religious

The Love Test data indicates that self reports of religiosity varied as a function of sexuality standards. 81% of the people who require friendship or casual acquaintance prior to the onset of sex, rated themselves as not or somewhat religious, as compared to 62% of people who require love prior to the onset of sex, and 31% of people who require engagement or marriage prior to the onset of sex. Conversely, only 19% of the people who require friendship or casual acquaintance prior to the onset of sex, rated themselves as moderately or very religious, as compared to 28% of people who require love prior to the onset of sex, and 69% of people who require engagement or marriage prior to the onset of sex.
